Celebrating the Italian Lira
The Italian Lira is both one of the strongest symbols of national unity and of supranational evolution in Italy. After having marked our national history and having achieved the Maastricht convergence criteria for the creation of the European Union, it now steps aside to welcome the Euro.
We have dedicated this manifestation to the Lira, promoted by the III Millennium Celebration Committee and the Collezioni Numismatiche, the exclusive distributor of this special commemorative coinage, The Golden Lira.
This is an initiative, which aims at reconstructing the key chapters in Italian history, and at representing the emotions and the memories that Italians have associated to the Lira through the artistic reproduction of our national currency.
The book that has been published is only the first of many achievements.
It will be followed by the creation of a monument to the Italian Lira in which children from Italian schools will be invited to participate. There will also be the preparation of an exhibition showing rare numismatic collections, historical evidence, as well as the reproduction of well-known bank notes and coins in precious metals, an issuance in celebration of the Lira.
It has also been proposed that one day of every year be dedicated to the Italian Lira, called "Lira Day". This could be a wonderful opportunity for Round Tables and Meetings dedicated to the 'old' currency to be held periodically.
A national television program and a prize "The Golden Lira" have also been foreseen, although they are still being organized.
The issuance of "The Golden Lira" stamp along with a special commemorative postcard has been requested as well.
The organization of these activities has actively involved many important people, entities, and institutions; all of which have been very dedicated to supporting our cause. From the III Millennium Celebration Committee (President James D. Watson, Nobel Prize recipient) to the technicians at the Mitsubishi Materials Corporation, we extend our most profound gratitude.
We'd also like to thank the President of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, who honored us by sponsoring this manifestation.
The Lira represents a powerful Italian symbol. Italian 'Europeism' is founded on its radical national principles.
